Reclaiming Our Power
When challenges arise, it’s tempting to slip into “make me” language: “They make me so frustrated!” Conscious Discipline reminds us to shift our energy from making children behave to helping them succeed. Composure allows us to pause, change our perception, and see behavior as communication. Instead of reacting, we can connect and guide students toward skills they’re still learning.
Notice when you are triggered.
What does it look like/feel like in my body?
Change your inner state from upset to calm.
Smile. Take a deep breath and Relax.
Shift your perception from negative to positive.
All behavior is a form of communication. What is the lagging skill?
Respond with guidance instead of reaction.
Be composed enough to teach the child what to do instead.
When we do this, we reclaim our role as the Safekeepers, creating safety and trust.
🔎 Reflection Prompt: Which of the four steps do you already do well? Which step could you focus on strengthening this week?
